Webinar on ‘Living Black at University’

Invitation to a webinar on ‘Living Black at University’: Launch of new research into the experiences of Black students in student accommodation, Thursday 3 February 2022, at 11am to 12.15pm

 Dear Colleague,

We are pleased to invite you to a webinar hosted jointly by HEPI and Unite Students to launch new research looking at the experiences of Black students in university accommodation. Drawing on both focus groups and polling of students and accommodation staff, the report looks at Black students’ experiences of safety and belonging, relationships and support structures within their accommodation and their experiences of racism, in order to provide a concrete set of recommendations to improve the accommodation experience for Black students.

After a short welcome from HEPI Director and Chair, Nick Hillman, and opening remarks from Richard Smith, Chief Executive Officer at Unite Students, the report findings will be presented by Osara Otobo, Consulting Fellow (Project Manager) for the report and Deputy Chair of the British Youth Council. We will then hold a panel discussion and Q&A with speakers to include: Hillary Gyebi-Ababio, Vice President Higher Education at the National Union of Students; Professor Iyiola Solanke, Chair in EU Law and Social Justice and Dean of EDI at the University of Leeds; and Sam Kingsley, EDI and Wellbeing Manager at Unite Students.
