Challenges Facing Universities: People Management Issues

Organised by the NCUP, this seminar on the challenges that face universities today took place at The Strand Campus of King’s College London.

The major emphasis was on the analysis of key people-centred processes within universities, which are associated with organizational efficiency and effectiveness. These are corporate strategy and managerial leadership, organisational change and development, and issues connected with the overseas operations of universities.

Speaker:
Dr Adrian Atkinson, Chartered Occupational Psychologist, is currently Chairman of Human Factors International (HFI). He was a Lecturer in Applied Psychology and then Director of the MBA programme at the Business School, University of Aston in Birmingham in the late 1970s/early1980s. He was a visiting Scientist with the US Navy at NPRDC, California before founding HFI in 1983. He has extensive consultancy experience with multinational companies and Governments. Adrian has wide experience of the assessment of top management and was the driving force behind the production of ‘The Mind of a Millionaire’ series, which was produced in conjunction with the Optomen Group for television and screened on the BBC, with the aim of enhancing entrepreneurship potential.

Speaker:
Prof Nic Beech is Vice Principal (Academic Planning and Performance), and the line manager of the Deans of the nine Schools that constitute the University of Dundee. He oversees strategic planning, academic leadership, staffing and resources. He was previously Professor of Management and Vice Principal at the University of St Andrews, and a Lead Fellow of the ESRC Advanced Institute of Management. Nic is Chair of the British Academy of Management and is a Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development. He holds a Chair in Management at the University of Dundee and his research interests are in change management, leadership and the construction of identity in creative industries (particularly music) and health care.

Speaker:
David Needle is a Senior Teaching Fellow, Department of Management, Kings College. University of London. Prior to that he was in the School of Business and Management, Queen Mary, University of London. For a number of years he was a Head of Department in the Business School at the University of East London, in which capacity he managed and taught postgraduate courses in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Portugal and Germany. David is the author of ‘Business in Context and is Joint Editor (with Prof David Guest, Kings College) of the Human Resource Management Volume, part of the J Wiley Encyclopaedia of Management.
