Letter from the President of the NCUP, Professor Terence Davis OBE

10th April, 2019

Dear NCUP Member,

I should like to draw your attention to the following six points.

1) We now have had our Annual lecture which was preceded by a buffet lunch and followed by the AGM.

This year the lecture was given at King’s College London by Professor Cameron Neylon, ‘The Changing System of Research Communications – Where Next in an Open-access World?’ The lecture was well attended and gave a most interesting glimpse of the future world of University research.

2) The AGM had the following items of interest approved.

  • Professor Jonathan Liu has taken over the role of Secretary of Council. By virtue of this, there is now an additional vacant place on the Council available.
  • Professor Kenneth Eaton has kindly agreed to become Treasurer
  • Professor Jawed Siddiqi, our past Treasurer, will continue to be a Council Member. We warmly thank him for his past work.
  • Professor Ranjan Banerjee DSc, Professor of Structural Dynamics at City University London, has resigned from Council.

We are deeply in his debt for over nine years of dedicated voluntary service; a period of which was as NCUP Vice President.

  • Professor W George Kernohan. Professor of Health Research, Ulster University has joined the Council. This is the first time that the Council has had a Council member, based in Northern Ireland. Council members are delighted that he is joining us.

3) The Council may co-opt an additional member at any time throughout the year and then stand for election for a period of three
years, given mutual agreement, at the next AGM. I would be happy for anyone wishing to discuss this matter to contact me, in confidence, by email, <terencedavis101@email.com>.

4) This year, we have had several new members of NCUP, however, we do need more to maintain our sound financial situation and broad representation across the UK and by academic discipline. If you know of a potential member please contact me by email or, either, our Vice President, Professor Janet Wilson <janet.wilson@northampton.ac.uk> or Cheryl Humphrey, Executive Officer <secretariat@ncup.org.uk>.

Membership fees are tax deductible. Alternatively, more information, including membership application forms, may be found on our website.

5) Our next event is our House of Lords (HOL) luncheon. It is to be held on Thursday, 23rd May (11.45-12.00hrs at Black Rod entrance and ends at 14.45hrs).

For some, it is a long way to come for a lunch but many do find London worth a trip with a night’s stay, particularly if it is with one’s partner or friend. Cheryl Humphrey, the Executive Officer, has already sent out information on the event to members (or contact her – see email address above).

6) I bring all members’ attention to the NEWS section on the www.ncup.org.uk website, where ALL members are invited to add their news, publications, honours etc. by sending the details to Janet Wilson (see her email address above). She has the overall responsibility for output on the website. Please do let us know!

My best wishes to all members,

Terence
