In the keynote NCUP Annual Education Lecture, Lord Professor Martin Rees  considered some of the problems faced by UK Universities from an uncertain future with constraints on funds, both public and private and the ever growing impact of distance learning.  Such burdens do not affect overseas competitors to the same extent: the US continues to act as a magnet for research and excellence and competitors are also emerging in the Far East, attracting students and scholars alike. Lord Rees discussed to what extent will British institutions lose out to rivals with greater freedom to attract the most talented scholars and students and higher levels of public and private funding?
